What changes the price

  • What heater you are replacing. The VEU rebate is bigger when you replace gas ducted heating than a gas wall heater. Replacing a gas wall heater with the Midea 19.5 kW, for example, comes to about $7,768 instead of $4,600.
  • Single or double storey. A double storey install adds about $1,100 inc GST. Some double storey homes need a second system, which we confirm at inspection.
  • System size. Bigger systems cost more to buy but also earn a bigger rebate, so the gap is smaller than you might expect. A rough guide is 1.1 to 1.4 kW of heating for every 10 m² you want to heat and cool.
  • Brand. Midea, Carrier and Rinnai give the lowest price after rebate. Daikin and Mitsubishi Electric cost more upfront.

How the VEU rebate works on ducted systems

  • The rebate only applies when you replace an existing gas heater. With no gas heating to replace, there is no rebate.
  • The rebate comes off your price upfront. You do not claim it back yourself.
  • VEU rules say you must pay at least $3,000 inc GST for a ducted system. If the rebate would take the price below that, it is reduced to match.

Ducted vs multi split vs split systems

Ducted suits homes where you want every room heated and cooled from one system with hidden vents. If you only need 3 to 5 rooms, a multi split system can cost less. For one or two rooms, a split system is usually cheapest.
